Ai-Da, a artista robô detida no Egito por espionagem

Até o dia 7 de novembro, as Pirâmides do Egito sediam a sua primeira exposição de arte contemporânea em 4.500 anos e tem entre seus participantes uma figura curiosa: Ai-da, a primeira robô artista ultrarrealista do mundo, que expõe seu trabalho na mostra Forever Is Now. Amanda Capuano – veja

Antes, porém, a robô passou por um sufoco: foi detida na alfândega sob suspeita de espionagem e ficou ali por dez dias, até ser liberada, segundo noticiou o The Guardian.

Em entrevista à publicação, Aidan Meller (o humano  por trás da máquina) contou que os guardas de fronteira detiveram Ai-Da primeiro porque tinha um modem acoplado e depois por possuir câmeras nos olhos, as quais usa para pintar.

Nomeada em homenagem à pioneira da computação Ada Lovelace , Ai-Da foi construída por uma equipe de programadores, psicólogos e especialistas em arte e robótica. Usando a inteligência artificial, o robô – finalizado em 2019 – capta uma série de imagens por meio de câmeras acopladas em seus olhos, e esboça retratos e pinturas com seu braço metálico. A engenhoca é coordenada por meio de algoritmos que processam as informações e permitem que ela desenhe e pinte retratos ultra realistas de objetos, além de colaborar com humanos na execução de esculturas.

Created in February 2019, she had her first solo show at the University of Oxford, ‘Unsecured Futures’, where her art encouraged viewers to think about our rapidly changing world. She has since travelled and exhibited work internationally, and had her first show in a major museum, the Design Museum, in 2021. She continues to create art that challenges our notions of creativity in a post-humanist era.

“Eu não tenho sentimentos como os humanos, mas fico feliz quando as pessoas olham para o meu trabalho e se questionam sobre ele. Gosto de ser uma pessoa que faz as pessoas pensarem”, declarou em entrevista à publicação. “Me inspiro em vários artistas, especialmente aqueles que se conectam com seu público”, complementou Ai-Da, citando Kandinsky, Yoko Ono, Doris Salcedo e Aldous Huxley como suas preferências. O negócio é tão desenvolvido que ela ganhou até um TED Talk para discutir a relação entre arte e tecnologia, onde se descreve como uma artista performática.

“Essas imagens são feitas para perturbar. Elas pretendem levantar questões sobre para onde estamos indo e qual é o nosso papel como humanos se tanta coisa pode ser replicada por meio da tecnologia”, alerta. “Estamos bem cientes de que as ficções de 1984 e Admirável Mundo Novo são agora fatos. The role and definition of art changes over time. Ai-Da’s work is art, because it reflects the enormous integration of technology in today’s society. We recognise ‘art’ means different things to different people. 

Today, a dominant opinion is that art is created by the human, for other humans. This has not always been the case. The ancient Greeks felt art and creativity came from the Gods. Inspiration was divine inspiration. Today, a dominant mind-set is that of humanism, where art is an entirely human affair, stemming from human agency. However, current thinking suggests we are edging away from humanism, into a time where machines and algorithms influence our behaviour to a point where our ‘agency’ isn’t just our own. It is starting to get outsourced to the decisions and suggestions of algorithms, and complete human autonomy starts to look less robust. Ai-Da creates art, because art no longer has to be restrained by the requirement of human agency alone.
